The purpose was clear: to meet the children that Helping Hands has been supporting for nearly a decade, to visit our projects, and to gain a true understanding of the reality on the ground.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"854\" class=\" translation-block\">\ud83d\udc49 I wanted to share what humanitarian commitment truly means: consistency, attentive listening, and lasting human connection. I hoped this immersion would spark a genuine desire to support our mission in the long run.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"956\">Guided by this spirit, I poured my energy, my time, and my hopes into this meeting.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"958\" data-end=\"1028\">\n<p data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"1028\" class=\" translation-block\">\ud83d\udd17 <a class=\"cursor-pointer\" href=\"https:\/\/helpinghands.fr\/nos-actions\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"963\" data-end=\"1026\">Discover our projects in Nepal<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr data-start=\"1030\" data-end=\"1033\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1085\">\ud83c\udfadBeyond appearances lies another reality<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1309\" class=\" translation-block\">A few months later, disappointment set in. I came to understand that this partner was never truly seeking real commitment. Once back, there was no real investment, and everything came to a sudden halt.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1733\">For me, it was a painful mistake, as I had pinned so many hopes and illusions on this collaboration.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1738\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1740\" data-end=\"1785\">\u2708\ufe0f\ud83d\udc94 The Humanitarian Tourism Dilemma<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"2034\" class=\" translation-block\">This kind of attitude reflects the phenomenon of humanitarian tourism (or voluntourism): traveling to disadvantaged regions to witness poverty firsthand, occasionally offering a one-off donation, yet without any genuine intention to engage over the long term.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2073\">The drawbacks are numerous:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2332\">\n<li data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2129\">\n<p data-start=\"2076\" data-end=\"2129\">The local people are reduced to mere sights to be observed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2130\" data-end=\"2221\">\n<p data-start=\"2132\" data-end=\"2221\">Nonprofits invest time in welcoming visitors who will not be seen again.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2222\" data-end=\"2332\">\n<p data-start=\"2224\" data-end=\"2332\">One-off donations create the illusion of support, but they fail to build sustainable projects.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2334\" data-end=\"2490\" class=\" translation-block\">Many leave believing they have \u201cchanged something\u201d in just a few days, while in truth, they have done nothing to tackle the underlying causes of poverty.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2668\">\n<p data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2668\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diplomatie.gouv.fr\/fr\/conseils-aux-voyageurs\/volontariat-international-et-humanitaire\/\">\ud83d\udd17 Further reading: The dangers of voluntourism \u2013 France Diplomatie<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr data-start=\"2670\" data-end=\"2673\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2675\" data-end=\"2717\">\ud83c\udf31 Helping Hands: a true commitment<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2719\" data-end=\"2772\">At Helping Hands, we stand for authentic humanitarianism:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2719\" data-end=\"2772\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1376\" src=\"https:\/\/helpinghands.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/pexels-rdne-6646778-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"Humanitarian tourism undermines causes. Helping is not about \u201cpassing through,\u201d but about staying, following, and accompanying.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3274\" data-end=\"3342\">\n<p data-start=\"3276\" data-end=\"3342\">\ud83d\udd17 <a class=\"cursor-pointer\" href=\"https:\/\/helpinghands.fr\/blog-association-humanitaire-enfants\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"3279\" data-end=\"3340\">Our commitments and values<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr data-start=\"3344\" data-end=\"3347\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3349\" data-end=\"3408\">\ud83d\udc94 Why it hurts those on the ground<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3410\" data-end=\"3559\" class=\" translation-block\">For a small organisation like ours, every visit truly matters. We open our stories, our projects, and above all, our bonds with the communities we serve.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3561\" data-end=\"3740\" class=\" translation-block\">Discovering that it was merely a visit, motivated by curiosity or ego, leaves a bitter taste. We are not seeking spectators\u2014we are seeking partners for the journey.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3742\" data-end=\"3745\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3747\" data-end=\"3789\">\ud83d\udccc The signs of true commitment<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3791\" data-end=\"3856\">Genuine commitment can be recognised by certain behaviours:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3857\" data-end=\"4050\">\n<li data-start=\"3857\" data-end=\"3903\">\n<p data-start=\"3859\" data-end=\"3903\">Finding out as much as possible before visiting<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3904\" data-end=\"3955\">\n<p data-start=\"3906\" data-end=\"3955\">Asking questions to understand the issues.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3956\" data-end=\"3993\">\n<p data-start=\"3958\" data-end=\"3993\">Supporting projects over the long term.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3994\" data-end=\"4050\">\n<p data-start=\"3996\" data-end=\"4050\">Prioritising the needs of others over one\u2019s own image<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4052\" data-end=\"4088\">All the rest is nothing but a fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4090\" data-end=\"4093\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"4095\" data-end=\"4131\">\ud83d\udca1 Acting for the right reasons<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4133\" data-end=\"4314\">Humanitarian aid is not a leisure activity, nor an \"exotic\" experience to be recounted.<br data-start=\"4210\" data-end=\"4213\" \/>It's a responsibility, a bond of trust and a commitment that requires sincerity and consistency.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4316\" data-end=\"4470\" class=\" translation-block\">Join us only if you believe in the cause \u2014 if you are willing to stay, to listen, to understand, and to act with respect.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4472\" data-end=\"4647\" class=\" translation-block\">At Helping Hands, we know that true commitment transforms lives.
